V.05.2Short ISMB 300: Shear Governs
Within 0.02% of STAAD.ProOpen in the app and solveNo sign-up needed: it runs in your browser.
Problem
Compare the IS 800:2007 limit-state capacities with STAAD.Pro's design output.
Reference
- STAAD.Pro V8i SS6, the same input file run by Sutranet (CODE IS800 LSD, TRACK 2 for the capacity of each clause).
Model
- ISMB 300, simply supported, span 1 m
- 500 kN/m: 250 kN shear at the supports
- E 205 GPa; the checks are given STAAD's section properties, so the comparison is of the code clauses alone
Comparison
| Result | Clause | STAAD.Pro | Sutranet | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Web shear Vd (kN) | 8.4 | 303.109 | 303.1089 | none |
| Plastic moment, low shear (kN·m) | 8.2.1 | 154.773 | 154.7727 | none |
| Governing ratio | 0.825 | 0.8248 | none |
- With shear above 0.6 Vd, Cl 9.2.2 reduces the moment capacity; Sutranet applies the reduction (to between the flange-only and plastic capacities), while STAAD reports the plastic value.
- In the app, sections come from the IS 808:2021 table, which differs from STAAD's older table by up to 1.1% (see V.07.1), so the app's capacities differ from these by about that much.
Reproduce in Sutranet CAD
- Open the project in the app (no sign-up needed), or download the file and open it with 📂 Import Job JSON in the File group.
- Run Analysis (Static) with P-Delta Analysis unticked and Design Code IS 800.
The app works in SI units; results in kip and inch are converted (1 kip = 4.448 kN, 1 kip-in = 0.1130 kN·m, 1 in = 25.4 mm).
Automated test: staad_design.rs, run on every change.
